Course Summary

Value Stream Mapping is one of the most powerful Lean tools for visualising, analysing, and improving end-to-end operational processes across manufacturing, service, and digital environments. This training course develops practical expertise in current-state mapping, future-state design, takt-based flow, and pull-system architecture to support effective Lean transformation initiatives. Participants gain the capability to identify waste, improve process efficiency, and redesign workflows that align with customer demand and organisational performance objectives. The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Masterclass equips professionals with practical techniques to analyse value flow, identify constraints, and create sustainable improvement strategies across diverse operational environments.

Throughout the training course, participants explore methods for calculating lead time, cycle time, process efficiency, and capacity performance while learning how to design future-state value streams using Lean principles. Emphasis is placed on applying Value Stream Mapping techniques to manufacturing, transactional, service, and digital processes to improve visibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement efforts. The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Masterclass enables professionals to strengthen operational excellence initiatives through structured process analysis, improvement prioritisation, and effective value stream governance.

Skills & Competencies

From this Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Masterclass, participants will develop the following key skills and competencies:

  • Current-state and future-state mapping
  • Lean waste identification capability
  • Process flow analysis techniques
  • Takt time and pull-system design
  • Value stream improvement planning
  • Operational efficiency evaluation skills

Key Learning Outcomes

At the end of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Masterclass, you will learn to:

  • Create accurate current-state value stream maps using Lean conventions.
  • Calculate takt time, lead time, and process flow performance metrics.
  • Identify the eight wastes through map analysis.
  • Design future-state value streams aligned with customer demand.
  • Develop implementation priorities and improvement action plans.
  • Apply VSM to service, transactional, and digital value streams.

How You Will Learn

Participants will develop Value Stream Mapping expertise through guided mapping exercises, structured process analysis, and collaborative improvement activities. Learning focuses on applying Lean principles to operational, transactional, and digital workflows while strengthening the ability to visualise value flow, identify inefficiencies, and design future-state improvements that support organisational performance.

Who should Attend?

  • Transformation and change managers
Course Outline
Day 1

VSM Foundations and Mapping Conventions

This day introduces the foundations of Value Stream Mapping and its role in Lean transformation initiatives. Participants explore mapping conventions, process boundaries, and data collection techniques. The topics covered will include:

  • Origins of VSM and its role in Lean transformation
  • Standard symbols, conventions, and mapping software options
  • Defining the value stream boundary and customer
  • Walking the process — data collection at the Gemba
Day 2

Building the Current-State Map

This day focuses on constructing current-state maps and analysing process and information flow. Participants learn how to calculate operational performance metrics and visualise workflow activity. The topics covered will include:

  • Drawing process boxes, data boxes, and material flow
  • Mapping information flow and push/pull signals
  • Calculating cycle time, value-added time, and lead time
  • Workshop: current-state map of a manufacturing process
Day 3

Analysing the Current State

This day explores waste identification, efficiency analysis, and capacity evaluation within current-state value streams. Participants assess process constraints and operational performance gaps. The topics covered will include:

  • Identifying the eight wastes on the map
  • Calculating process cycle efficiency
  • Constraint identification and capacity analysis
  • Workshop: current-state map of a transactional process
Day 4

Designing the Future State

This day focuses on designing future-state value streams using Lean flow and pull-system principles. Participants examine takt time, levelling strategies, and improvement prioritisation methods. The topics covered will include:

  • Takt time and continuous flow design principles
  • Pull systems, kanban, and supermarket logic
  • Pacemaker process selection and levelling (heijunka)
  • Identifying Kaizen bursts and improvement priorities
Day 5

Implementation and Governance

This day examines implementation planning, governance structures, and Value Stream Mapping applications for digital processes. Participants present future-state improvement strategies and implementation plans. The topics covered will include:

  • Implementation planning and sequencing
  • VSM governance and value stream organisation design
  • VSM for digital and software value streams
  • Final team presentations and certification
