Course Summary

Environmental pressures, decarbonisation commitments, and evolving climate policies have pushed natural gas—and especially LNG—into a central role as a transition fuel. While still a fossil fuel, natural gas offers lower carbon intensity than coal and oil and is widely viewed as a pragmatic bridge in global energy systems until renewables and low-carbon solutions become fully competitive and scalable.

Against this backdrop, LNG markets are undergoing rapid structural change. The traditional model of long-term, oil-indexed, point-to-point supply is being challenged by growing spot and short-term trade, the rise of portfolio players and trading houses, new pricing benchmarks, and increased use of financial derivatives. Oversupply from new liquefaction capacity, particularly in the U.S. and Australia, coupled with demand fluctuations in Asia, has exerted downward pressure on prices and accelerated a shift in procurement strategies. Major buyers are diversifying away from single-supplier, rigid long-term contracts towards flexible portfolios that blend term, spot, and destination-flexible volumes.

In this evolving environment, effective commercial management requires a deep understanding of market fundamentals, pricing mechanisms, contractual structures, and risk-management tools. A key element is the use of futures and swaps for hedging price exposure. Highly liquid benchmarks such as Brent and Henry Hub—supported by robust underlying cash markets and a broad base of participants—provide reference points that can be effectively integrated into LNG pricing formulas and risk-management strategies.

This GLOMACS training course will highlight:

  • LNG market fundamentals and global supply–demand dynamics
  • Traditional and emerging LNG pricing methods, indices, and benchmarks
  • Economic evaluation of LNG projects and portfolio decisions
  • LNG supply, trading, and portfolio optimisation strategies
  • The interaction between natural gas and LNG markets across key regions
  • How regional pricing dynamics impact contract structures and negotiation strategies
  • The role of LNG derivatives (swaps, futures, options) in hedging and trading
  • Practical approaches to managing price, volume, and credit risk in LNG commercial portfolios
